Experimentations...

I tried lots of different methods to interpret my photos. The Spanish Artist, Tapies, influenced me to try plaster. However, all I found was that I enjoyed mixing the plaster more than the finished pieces. I mixed in some paint with the plaster for colour. This part worked well.

I tried using washing up liquid. I got this idea from looking at the cars' dirt marks and envisaging what would remove dirt. It wasn't that effective on the white paper but it is an interesting medium and I could create marks in it easily.
These are some photocopies of the marks on cars blown up. The marks changed into something very effective. I places two of them together and they complimented each other well as one's eye continuously bounces from one to the other.
These were some coffee marks on grey paper... When the coffee was spilt, it left uncontrolled marks...

I used red plastice and paint between two sheets to create marks. The front (below) created what I typically thought it would but the reverse side of the plastic (above) I discovered to be far more interesting...

My preferred medium so far is spray paint which Tauba Auerbach uses in her work. I used stencils influenced by the photocopies to make marks with the spray paint...

PAINTING!!! We finally are in a discipline and I am in Painting for the remainder of first year. I am so happy about my decision. We got started immediately by doing lots of contextual research. I found this very intensive and at times laborious but at the same time realised how important it was to instigate this project especially. I looked at artists such as Kiefer, Tauba Auerbach, Ruby Sterling, Alexis Harding and some more too!! They all had one thing in common which was there use of materials other than just paint. This past week, I collected lots of primary research for this project. I took photos this week of what interested me...

I took photos of cars at the start of the week. I liked the shiny, metallic surface and the reflections it created.

I later noticed that the dirt marks and the scratches on the metal also interested me.

I found the idea of metal rusting intriguing as well..

As well as the way the paint peels back off the surface...

I started experimenting yesterday with materials like paint, coffee and washing up liquid. I also tried some plaster inspired by the Spanish artist, Tapies. I found that I enjoyed making the plaster more than the finised look of the plaster itself.

Painting Elective Week 2

I continued with the palette knife painting and icorporated the credit card to master the straight lines. I grew in confidence with the palette knife and was delighted with my newly learnt skill!

I upped the scale and began using the credit card because it allowed me greater scope and I enjoyed this more.

I moved to another installation because I felt I had exhausted the possibilities in thumbnail form from my angle in the first installation. I moved to my second installation:

I learned about the colour wheel and did some experiments in my sketchbook.
I learned how mixing brown and orange created both a cold and warm brown:

Likewise with green and red:

And similarly with yellow and purple:

I also did some mark-making in my sketchbook...

This is a black and white photocopy of one of my paintings with large brushstrokes on top...

Painting in different saturation...

The paintings  from the second installation were far bigger. I found this more enjoyable! I found a palette of colours which I liked and realised how important it was to step in and out of my paintings as I did them. I researched Frank Auerbach among other contemporary artists and his paintings really inspired me and directed me in a direction which I felt was right. This helped me to enjoy the experience!!
